Wildwood Canada Spire Help

How to do a backup in Spire

Spire can be configured to automatically backup your Spire database.
But if you need to manually make a backup, here is how to do it.
You can only do this on the server

When you should do this:

  • before doing a yearend
  • before importing data
  • before any major update of the Spire software to a new version
  • any operation on large portions of your Spire data, for example running Inventory Code Change on 1200 items
  • any other major update of your data

Once you've made your backup (Spire calls it a Snapshot), remember that this contains your entire Spire data set, and you should treat it accordingly, from a security point of view.

HOW TO CREATE THE BACKUP / SNAPSHOT

On the server, locate the Spire Server icon beside the clock.

Single-click on this icon to open up the Spire Server Company List window

Highlight the company you wish to create a backup of.
From the menu, select File, Create Snapshot. Spire refers to backups  as "snapshots".

Navigate to where you want to save the Snapshot, and give it a filename. It can be any name you wish, but it is best to name it for the date and time you are creating it, as well as the company name. Click Save.

Enter the Spire server password. This is NOT a Spire user ID and password, nor your Wondows Server Admiinstrator password, but the Spire Server password, that was setup when Spire was installed.

The Snapshot creation will proceed. It usually only takes a few seconds, but maybe as much as a minute or so.

When it has completed the "Export Company" window will disappear. No message will be displayed indicating successful completion.

**Remember that this Snapshot file may still be located on a local hard drive. A true backup is not completed until you also move this snapshot file to an external device of some sort and take it offsite. However, if you are just creating this Snapshot prior to performing yearend, this may not be necessary.

If you need to restore from a Snapshot file, please contact Wildwood Canada, as there is no direct function for doing so within Spire.
